Biology

Biology is a very popular subject at Bournemouth School and this is a reflection of the departments’ aim to deliver engaging and stimulating lessons that cater for the individual learning styles of all our students. Biology offers students an insight to the world around them, provokes thought and discussion about things that are happening today in their world and provides students with an excellent range of skills that will be invaluable in higher education. All pupil study Biology to GCSE level and up to 80 students go on to study it at A-level.

Accommodation comprises three laboratories, all of which are equipped with interactive whiteboards. We are very fortunate to have an extensive range of resources to enable all our students to develop excellent practical skills across the different key stages. Students will have access to a number of different text books, and our library is very well stocked with Biological Literature.

The Biology department is staffed by three full time and two part-time Biology specialist teachers and a specialist technician. Each staff member makes a significant contribution to the work of the department as a whole, and all play an active part in the development of schemes of work, resources and policies. We hold regular department meetings and always include the sharing of good practice as an agenda item. All members of the Biology department are enthusiastic, professional and supportive of each other. As a department we are committed to supporting our students and all colleagues are prepared to give up time to provide revision lessons and extra support when needed.

Students studying Biology at Bournemouth School will develop their skills in the application of knowledge, investigation, evaluation, explanation, analysis and practical dexterity. These skills will enable students to become accomplished Biologists, and are also transferable to other areas of the curriculum.
