Lionel's biography:

Having been brought up in a German-English family I grew up most of my childhood in Germany before attending sixth form at Bournemouth School. After graduation I spent some time in Strasbourg to get some first insights into studying law (in French), before pursuing a double-degree in Law at University College London (UCL) and Université Panthéon Assas Paris II (LLB hons./ Master I). To broaden my European background further I pursued a Master of Arts in EU-International Relations and Diplomacy Studies at the College of Europe in Bruges (Belgium). Since then I have been doing research on development assistance and European interests outside the EU; and now work as Senior Policy Advisor for European International Contractors, an interest group association lobbying international financing institutions and development banks.

What was best about Lionel's time at Bournemouth School?

I felt it was a very respectful environment and I learnt a lot both academically and on a personal/ social level. Staff were supportive and genuinely interested in the pupils.

Who does Lionel remember most fondly?

Ms. Fisher, the Newton House Master, has remained in my mind as being extremely supportive and someone to look up to; as well as Ms. Chapleo, the Head of Geography, who always made Geography lessons interesting and fun.

What would Lionel change about their time at Bournemouth School?

As this period of time was enjoyable to me I would not know what to change.

What is Lionel's favourite anecdote/most vivid memory?

There are many positive moments I cherish and like to think back to. I enjoyed being part of the school, as prefect/ House Captain and valued my peers; the teachers made the difference as it was not overly scholastic. Amongst the memories: Going down to the fields to socialise, the field-trip to Studland or London, the Labour Party Conference…

Lionel's final thoughts

I would love to hear from others I have studied with, and school staff who remember me. It would be great to revive the Old Bournemouthian Association and I d be happy to get involved; in the meantime get in touch through the Bournemouth School Alumni Group on LinkedIn.
