Phil's biography:
After a brief spell at BDH Chemicals, I moved to the UK Atomic Energy Authority at Winfrith in their Biological and Environmental Monitoring section. I continued studies part time and eventually was awarded a PhD in radiochemistry from the University of Southampton. I moved to Southampton in 1994 and am now Professor of Radioanalytical Chemistry, an Associate Dean and Director of a radioanalytical laboratory and research facility within the University. I am also co-director of a private company.
Personally, I live in Hythe with my lovely (and tolerant) partner and two amazing step daughters and have two wonderful grown up children and four awesome grandchildren.
What was best about Phil's time at Bournemouth School?
The opportunity to explore and discover. There were so many opportunities available, so many talented, supportive and motivated teachers and the facilities were excellent.
Who does Phil remember most fondly?
Co producing the ‘unofficial’ school magazine – particularly the unorthodox teacher interviews.
Helping to resurrect the signals section within the CCF.
Challenging Dr Waite’s tolerance to what he would allow us to try in the chemistry lab – recreating the basics of life by passing electric sparks through explosive gas mixtures was apparently a step too far!
What would Phil change about their time at Bournemouth School?
I would engage in more of the clubs and activities that were available to me.
What is Phil's favourite anecdote/most vivid memory?
So many memories including Mr Hawkins’ larger than life character and humour, Mr Neame’s art studio with printing press, the prefab classrooms and labs, playing in the copse, the torture of cross country (I must hold the record for coming last the most times) and so many more. But mostly the friendships.
