Peripatetic Music Lessons

Peripatetic Music Lessons

We are pleased to be able to offer instrumental lessons to students in Year 7 when they start with us in September. If your child wishes to learn an instrument, please read the information below and complete the form that follows.

Our team of visiting music teachers cover the following instruments: violin, viola, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet/cornet, French horn, trombone, tuba, euphonium, piano, percussion (both kit and orchestral), guitar, bass guitar and voice. Parents pay the school in advance of the tuition rather than directly to the teachers, and the school acts as paymaster, coordinates the timetables and liaises with the teachers. Lessons are organised on a rotating basis to avoid students missing the same classes repeatedly. Lessons are 20 minutes each and there are 28 lessons throughout the school year.  Students may be entered for graded examinations when appropriate.

Ensemble playing is an important part of learning most instruments. We run weekly rehearsals for orchestra, jazz band, concert band, various choirs and chamber ensembles including string quartet and barbershop quartet. We warmly encourage all students to participate.

The fee for a year’s instrumental tuition in 2025-26 was £469, for 28 x 20-minute lessons. This fee is paid in termly instalments. The cost for 2026-27 may be subject to a small increase in the light of pay reviews before the start of the new academic year. If your child is in receipt of Free School Meals, then no charge is made for the cost of the instrumental lessons.

If your child wishes to be considered for instrumental lessons in school from September, you need to complete the form below by Friday, 17 April 2026. We will then inform you if we are able to offer your child lessons in school during the week beginning 15 June. At this point, you will be asked to pay the first instalment and agree to the terms and conditions (available below for your reference) by Friday, 3 July in order to confirm the lessons.

Any students for whom we are unable to provide lessons in September will automatically be placed on a waiting list. There is greater demand for some instruments, particularly piano and guitar.

Should you have any questions about the provision of lessons, please contact Mrs Whitehead, our Director of Music.
