The GCSE course focuses upon three components. 

Component 1:  Religious, Philosophical and Ethical Studies in the modern world

How it is assessed:  Written examination: 2 hours; 120 marks; 50% of qualification.

For this component learners will study four themes:

  • Issues of Relationships
  • Issues of Life and Death with a study of Humanism
  • Issues of Good and Evil
  • Issues of Human Rights

In order to study Component 1 learners will need to study Component 2 and 3 in order to have the background on beliefs and practices to cover the Philosophical, Moral and Ethical issues taught.

Component 2:  Study of Christianity

How it is assessed:  Written examination: 1 hour; 60 marks; 25% of qualification.

Learners should be aware what Christians believe and how they practice their faith for example; God, afterlife, creation, pilgrimage and worship

Component 3: Study of a World Faith (Islam)

How it is assessed:  Written examination: 1 hour; 60 marks; 25% of qualification.

Learners should be aware what Muslims believe and how they practice their faith for example; Allah, the afterlife, the five pillars, Jihad and festivals

How it is assessed?

There is no coursework. Learners will be assessed in a variety of different ways. This is to check understanding in individual lessons or after particular topics or during exam seasons.  The main assessments will be through exam questions so that they have the opportunity to hone their technique and understand the structure of the exam.

Higher Education and Careers

The GCSE is also good preparation for students wishing to study Christianity, Philosophy, and Religion and Ethics at A Level.  Students who study this subject have gone on to study Law, Politics, History, Business, English, Psychology, Biology and Sociology.
