Michael's biography:
I lasted two years in the bank; moved on to the Defence Operational Analysis Establishment, as an Assistant Scientific Officer. From there to the Royal Aeronautical Society as Assistant Editor of AEROSPACE magazine. There followed 17 years on DEFENCE magazine, eight as Editor. 1993-2015 saw me with Jane’s Information Group, editing ‘Jane’s Defence Systems Modernisation’ then ‘Jane’s Defence Upgrades’ and for the final 13 years to retirement, I was editor of Jane’s Electro-Optic Systems yearbook. In addition, between 1972-86, I served as a Flying Officer RAFVR(T) with 2211 (Bracknell) Sqn Air Training Corps and contributing aircraft modelling and aviation news pages to the Air Cadet News paper. I’ve also contributed many features to other aviation/defence publications over the years.
What was best about Michael's time at Bournemouth School?
Time spent with CCF and involvement in school drama – in the cast of Henry IV part 1 (Bardolph to Scott Lidbetter’s Falstaff) in March 1967, then Journey’s End (1968) and Six Men of Dorset (1969).
Who does Michael remember most fondly?
Tom Bircher, who directed Henry IV part 1; Don Truss, who got me through O level maths; Ralph Sephton, who led the RAF Section as well as teaching me basic woodwork; and Bernie Walker, who indulged my attempts at artwork.
David Hilliam declined to enter me for the Use of English paper. Some years later we encountered one another in the Square and after I explained that I earned my living as a writer and editor, I observed it wasn’t a bad outcome for someone not considered competent enough to take Use of English. He appreciated the irony … I think!
What would Michael change about their time at Bournemouth School?
The Day Six timetable.
What is Michael's favourite anecdote/most vivid memory?
Briefing P/O Hopkins on parachute and MaeWest before flying in the Chipmunk, taking him to the aircraft and strapping him in. I then spoke with the pilot, telling him that it was our officer’s first time and he’d love to experience aerobatics. 25 mins later, unstrapping him, he passed over a full sick bag. The story went round the staffroom.
