Cancer Research Prize Winners

Bournemouth School is delighted to celebrate the outstanding success of six Sixth Form students Alex, Sophie, Parry, Hector, Alex and Sam who have achieved Joint First Place in the national Cancer Research Prize competition organised by Imperial College, London.

The team delivered an impressive presentation on their solution to inequality in cancer provision “SpotWatch: A Solution to Standardised Melanoma Detection” on Wednesday, 14 October, showcasing their knowledge and skills of application. Spotwatch is a transparent adhesive patch applied in seconds, worn over the mole for five minutes and uses smartphone photography to allow standardised mole monitoring without specialist equipment.

As a result of this fantastic achievement, Bournemouth School will receive £2,500 to support science-related activities within the school. This prize will provide valuable opportunities to further enrich students’ scientific learning, encourage curiosity and inspire future scientists.

In recognition of their success, the team has also been offered the opportunity to take part in an online mentoring meeting with an academic from Imperial College, London. This exciting prospect will allow the students to gain further insight into scientific research, explore their academic interests and learn more about opportunities in science and higher education.

Competing successfully at a national level is a significant accomplishment, and the team represented Bournemouth School with distinction.

Congratulations to Alex, Alex, Sophie, Parry, Hector and Sam on this exceptional achievement! We are incredibly proud of their success and look forward to seeing how this experience inspires their continued interest in science and research.
