Martin's biography:

I studied law at Durham and Nottingham, qualified as a solicitor with Herbert Smith and also worked for Addleshaw Goddard. I left legal practice for LawWorks; a charity focused on pro bono work. I was fortunate to receive a charity scholarship for the Exec MBA programme at Cranfield School of Management. I was now married to Caroline and we had our first son, Bennett in 2010.

Caroline and I ran a Scout Troop in Islington and it was on the back of this, along with a love of outdoor activity, that I then moved to run a residential outdoor centre in the Chiltens for London Youth. After four years there (and the arrival of our second son, Thomas) I became a director at the charity, overseeing safety and safeguarding.

In mid 2024 I became CEO of the charity, Chiltern Open Air Museum.

What was best about Martin's time at Bournemouth School?

The fun I had with my friends while learning and getting ready for the transition to university. A great bunch of people (teachers and pupils) who were most of my world for seven years. Plus, working with the girls at BSG on numerous joint ventures.

Who does Martin remember most fondly?

Endless football on the field over lunchtime, playing in the copse, table football competition in the sixth form common room. My form tutor over multiple years, Mr Hubbard – what a lovely man to shape the futures of 25 young men. Giving our new Head, Mr Granger, a tour of the school after his appointment.

What would Martin change about their time at Bournemouth School?

I could have done better in my French A-Level. Not sure what happened there!

What is Martin's favourite anecdote/most vivid memory?

Year 9 camp. Rich Horler and I paired up on the hike from Studland to Brenscombe farm. A great day out. Finding the WW2 gun emplacements on Nine Barrow Down and one of our fellow pupils in the CCF thinking they were sheep shelters. I look back now, impressed at the independence we were granted at 13/14.

Martin's final thoughts

I had a wonderful time at Bournemouth School and was honoured to be chosen as Head Boy in my final year. I very much hope to stay in contact and see more of the 125th celebrations as they unfold.
