https://qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/edexcel-a-levels/mathematics-2017.html (select AS Mathematics from Specification drop-down menu)
Entry requirement: Grade 6 in Mathematics (this is a two year course)
The study of AS level mathematics will also benefit the study of other A level subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, Computing, Geography, Psychology and Economics. This course covers the 1st half of the A level, and is ideal for students who want to extend their GCSE mathematics skills, but do not need the full A level in mathematics for Higher Education.
Subject Content and Course Assessment
Students sit one 2 hour pure paper and one 1 hour 15 minute applied paper in the summer of Year 13.
Paper 1 will cover the Pure Mathematics content:
- Proof
- Algebra and functions
- Coordinate geometry
- Trigonometry
- Exponentials and logarithms
- Differentiation
- Integration
- Vectors
Paper 2 will cover Statistics and Mechanics:
- Statistical sampling
- Quantities and units in mechanics
- Data presentation and interpretation
- Kinematics
- Probability
- Forces and Newton’s laws
- Statistical distributions
- Statistical hypothesis testing
Calculators are permitted in all of the exams and therefore students are expected to have a calculator which has an iterative function and which has the ability to compute summary statistics and access probabilities from standard statistical distributions. The Mathematics department will offer advice as to which calculators will be suitable.
Higher Education and Careers
AS level Mathematics is well-respected by employers and universities. Studying Mathematics beyond GCSE develops the ability to think logically and analytically. For most science, technology and engineering degree courses, an AS level Mathematics is a well-recognised qualification.
