Arief's biography:
Arief McKenna attended Bournemouth School from Year 7 through to Year 13, becoming an active and dedicated member of the school community. From his early years, he embraced every opportunity to contribute — representing the school in athletics, cross-country, and rugby, and helping at open evenings through speeches and tours. His enthusiasm, teamwork, and commitment shone throughout his time at the school. In Sixth Form, Arief studied Mathematics, Economics, and Physics, achieving excellent A Level results of AAA. His accomplishments were recognized through multiple awards, including the Harvard Book Award, the Dr Fenwick Award, and the A Level Performance Award. In Year 12, Arief was honored to be appointed Head Boy, a role that allowed him to give back to the school that had supported and inspired him. Arief has since gone on to study Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham, continuing to build on the foundations laid at Bournemouth School.
What was best about Arief's time at Bournemouth School?
One of the highlights of my time at Bournemouth School was taking part in the many activities and sporting events, such as Charity Weeks, House Competitions, and Sports Days. These experiences allowed me to build lasting memories with friends — especially during the unforgettable 2024 Newton/Turner Charity Week, which perfectly captured the spirit and camaraderie of our school community.
Who does Arief remember most fondly?
From Years 7 to 11, my Head of Year, Mr. Robjohns, was truly exceptional. I often turned to him for guidance whenever challenges arose, and he was always supportive and understanding. I still remember his weekly assemblies vividly — especially how proudly he’d tell us he boasted about our year group to the other Heads of Year!
What would Arief change about their time at Bournemouth School?
If I could go back, I’d dedicate more time to Bournemouth School’s extracurricular activities — especially sports. I wish I’d made more memories through those experiences with my friends, as opportunities to meet up and enjoy such activities together are now rare. Those moments of teamwork and fun were some of the most rewarding parts of my school life.
What is Arief's favourite anecdote/most vivid memory?
In Year 11, behind the Maths Block, my friends and I somehow booted our football onto the roof. Our “genius” plan to get it back involved a long stick and a very unstable three-man totem pole. We nearly toppled over multiple times, but against all odds, we actually got the ball back — laughing so hard we almost fell again!
Arief's final thoughts
My time at Bournemouth School is something I’ll always look back on with real fondness. It’s where I made amazing memories, lifelong friends, and grew into the person I am today. I’ll always be so grateful to Bournemouth School and all the teachers for giving me such a special and unforgettable chapter of my life. Thank you, Bournemouth School!
