Our Year 12 and 13 Medical Society students recently welcomed Mrs Nicholson, a practising paramedic, for a fascinating insight into life on the frontline of emergency healthcare.
At Bournemouth School, we actively encourage our student society leaders to take the initiative in organising their own guest speakers and this visit was arranged by Med Soc Co-Lead Sophie. It was a great example of students taking ownership of their society and creating opportunities for their peers.
Whilst our Medical Society has previously welcomed doctors and surgeons, this was our first opportunity to hear directly from a paramedic, offering students a different perspective on the world of medicine.
Rather than focusing on her own career journey, Mrs Nicholson gave an honest and engaging account of the realities of working as a paramedic. She spoke openly about the pressures facing the NHS, the challenges of responding to emergencies and, above all, the privilege she feels in having a career dedicated to helping others.
Students learned about the many responsibilities paramedics manage when attending an emergency, from reassuring patients and their relatives to gathering vital medical information and communicating with hospital teams, often whilst working in challenging and unpredictable situations.
One particularly interesting part of the session was learning about GoodSAM, an innovative platform that helps connect people experiencing medical emergencies with nearby trained responders. It was something many of us had never heard of and highlighted how technology is helping communities and emergency services work together to save lives. You can find out more at their website.
Another important message was the value of teamwork and mutual respect across the medical profession. Regardless of their role, healthcare professionals are all working towards the same goal of providing the best possible care for their patients.
It was an insightful session that encouraged our aspiring medics to think beyond the hospital environment and appreciate the dedication, compassion and teamwork required throughout the healthcare profession.
A huge thank you to Mrs Nicholson for taking the time to visit Bournemouth School and share her experiences with our students.
