I studied for a PhD at Oxford University 1990-3, then worked as a historian in Winchester 1993-2000 and Leicester 2001-5. Since 2005 I have been an editor of the Victoria County History of Oxfordshire.

Mark's final thoughts

BS was a good school for pupils who enjoyed academic subjects, less so for those who were clever enough to pass the 11+ but lacked interest in studying. Also, being at an all boys school did not prepare me well socially for university.
