Les's biography:
I have worked abroad for my whole career in education at colleges and universities, returning to the UK permanently in 2015.
What was best about Les's time at Bournemouth School?
The sixth form, school plays and other less serious performances.
Who does Les remember most fondly?
Tom Bircher opened my eyes (and mind) to the study of literature. Having ‘Jasper’ Dodds as a teacher in the first form gave us all resilience. CCF camps were great adventures (RN Section at various Portsmouth bases and HMS Lochinvar up on the Forth stand out). Bernie Walker was a necessary eccentric and very good art teacher.
What would Les change about their time at Bournemouth School?
We had several teachers who should not have been teaching but apparently were hard to get rid of. I hope they don’t have modern equivalents.
What is Les's favourite anecdote/most vivid memory?
In the mock general election of (I think) 1964 were managed to get Baz Johns elected for the Natrional Youth Party. The school authorities were less than pleased.
Les's final thoughts
I lost half a crown down a gap in the wood block flooring outside the chemistry lab in about 1962. I wonder if it’s still there…
